Orchid is an incredible, amazingly beautiful plant that is popular with flower growers due to its luxurious, exotic-looking flowers.

The plant is not whimsical, but requires several other conditions, different from the usual house plants.

With proper care and ideal keeping conditions, the orchid pleases with its flowering almost all year round.

Plant life cycle after flowering

There is a dormant period between flowering. A distinctive feature of its onset is a change from the green color of the peduncle to yellowish or pink-purple, depending on the type of orchid.

At this time, the plant is gaining strength. Your task is to provide comfortable conditions for this. So, with constant care, if the plant seems to have stopped growing - do not worry.

In fact, at this moment, vital processes occur, hidden from the eyes of the grower. After a rest, the duration of which depends on the type of orchid, your flower will again become the pride and decoration of the house.

How to take care at home in winter and at other times?

When choosing the right care, you should take into account the following factors:

  • plant life cycle;
  • season.

Depending on the stage of the life cycle, faded flowers require different care.

Before the ejection of the peduncle, you should not be carried away by feeding, otherwise the plant will begin to vigorously grow the root system and leaves, and it will not rush to flowering. Feeding should be resumed at the prescribed rate after the formation of the peduncle.

During the dormant period, watering should be carried out less often than during flowering.... The air temperature, illumination during the "rest" should be somewhat reduced. The dormant period for an orchid falls at different times of the year, respectively, care in warm and cold months will be different.

When airing the room, in the cold season, be sure to remove the plants from the windowsill. Avoid drafts.

In winter, the temperature in the room is lower, because of this, the soil dries out more slowly. In this case, watering should be further reduced. You may have to limit yourself to spraying the roots, see the condition of the soil, temperature and humidity in the room.

Make sure that moisture does not accumulate at the base at the growth point. It is recommended to gently blot the water with a corner of a paper napkin or cotton swabs.

If the windowsill is too cold put the pot with the plant on a layer of insulation... Styrofoam, cork backing under the laminate is suitable.

With an excess of water, root rot is possible.

Features of growing after flowers have fallen

The quality of post-flowering care affects how quickly your plant recovers. and will gain strength for new buds. The basis of proper care is cutting off a wilted peduncle, timely transplantation. And you will definitely wait for the plant to bloom again after flowering!

Do I need to cut off the shoot on which there were buds?

After flowering, you need to pay attention to the condition of the peduncle. The methods of cutting it depend on this.

Removing the boom will correctly produce a garden pruner. It is less traumatic for the plant. Remember to disinfect the instrument with, for example, a bleach solution.

If only the tip is dry

  1. Examine the peduncle carefully, you will surely find young buds on it. In this case, step back 1.5 cm from the topmost bud and remove the faded part of the arrow.
  2. Treat the cut site with wax to avoid moisture ingress and, as a result, decay.

The arrow is already fading completely

Wait until it dries completely for the plant to take up nutrients from a drying peduncle. Then the arrow should be completely removed, leaving only its small stump of 2 cm at the base.

When it keeps growing

If the color of the arrow is still green, then it may not be cut off, but left to bloom again. This is especially the case in the spring season.

There are types of orchids for which the arrow should not be removed - dendrobium, oncidium, cymbidium.

Transferring to another pot

The plant is transplanted every 2-3 years as needed, after flowering. It is better to change "place of residence" in spring or early summer.

  1. Lift the flower out of the pot carefully. Place in warm water until the soil is soaked.
  2. When the lumps of soil have fallen off, rinse the residues from the roots from the shower with a stream of warm water.
  3. Remove damaged areas of the root system. Sprinkle the cut with charcoal.
  4. Place the flower on a paper towel until it dries completely. This usually takes several hours.
  5. Prepare the substrate and pour it 5 cm into the pot. Place the plant on top. Sprinkle soil over the roots and compact by hand gently.
  6. Submerge the pot in water for 5 minutes, then remove and drain.

If after the last point the soil has dropped significantly, add the substrate on top.

Step by step care instructions

The orchid has faded, the petals have completely fallen off. Let's figure out what to do next with the plant:

  1. Remove the peduncle either completely (yielding 2 cm from the base), or 1.5 cm above the young buds.
  2. Assess the need for transplant. Signs that you need to transplant a flower:
    • Rhizomes do not fit in a pot.
    • The soil has lost its density, there is a lot of emptiness in the pot.
    • The substrate is crumbling, becoming rotten.
    • A musty smell appeared.
    • The roots changed color to gray or brown.
    • The leaves became faded, as if covered with wax.
  3. If a transplant is necessary, then make it. Remember that it is better to do this in the spring or early summer.

  4. Moderate watering, top dressing.
  5. Create a comfortable environment by lowering the temperature and humidity. Lighting must remain adequate.
  6. During the resting phase, it is not necessary to transfer the pot to a new place, this will create unnecessary stress for the plant. You can do this if the rest period is too long. The flower will perceive this as a call for flowering-reproduction, for procreation in the changed conditions.

Consequences of wrong actions

Inadequate care entails a number of problems that are worth talking about.

Decay of roots and neck

The process of watering orchids is significantly different from other indoor plants.... This flower should not be watered from a watering can, the accumulation of moisture will lead to decay of the roots, the water balance of the plant is disturbed.

The substrate should not contain moisture-consuming components. The problem is that this is a moisture-absorbing invisible part (most often New Zealand moss or artificial components: mineral wool, foam rubber) dries much slower than the rest of the bark, and we water until the visible part of the bark is saturated. It is so very easy to pour over the plant, which will lead to decay.

Sunburn

Direct sunlight can affect plant health. It is better to place the plant on the north, west, east windows. In the absence of such an opportunity, shade the orchid.

After spraying until the moisture is completely dry, do not allow direct sunlight to hit your plant. The water droplets will then act as lenses, increasing the likelihood of sunburn. But also the orchid must dry completely before dark.

Overheat

Sluggish, soft, shriveled leaves are the result of plant overheating due to high temperature and humidity in a poorly ventilated room.

Orchid care is not as scary as it seems... Even inexperienced growers can do it. The main thing is to take into account the stage of the life cycle when creating comfortable conditions of detention.
