Orchid lovers often refuse to buy adult plants and grow a flower on their own from seeds brought from China, since it is much cheaper.

Is it possible to grow an orchid in such a way, how to do it correctly, what types of plants the seed is sold, how much it costs and how to check for authenticity, as well as answers to other questions - you will learn from our article.

What types of plant seeds are sold in the PRC?

Most often, seeds of the following plant species are sold on Chinese sites:

  • phalaenopsis;
  • cymbidium;
  • dendrobium;
  • wanda;
  • cattleya.

All of these species are hybrid, which allows you to grow them yourself at home without serious labor costs.

Is it possible to grow a flower from it at home?

Of course, real orchids can be grown from the planting material sold in China. But it is worth getting ready for the fact that the process will be long and laborious. To do this, you will have to stock up on the necessary tools and materials, as well as maintain sterility and a suitable temperature in the growing area.

If you want to grow real orchids from seed, prepare to wait at least four years.

Further in the photo you can see what kind of orchids can grow from Chinese seeds:

Features of Chinese seeds

Some Chinese sellers, instead of orchid seeds, send customers planting material of completely different plants, as well as lawn grass or just weeds.

After such a deception, many growers abandon the idea of growing an exotic flower on their own. But, since the planting material is quite cheap, you should not worry. If you are ready to achieve your desired goal, try placing your order several times.

From the video you will find out what can grow from Chinese orchid seeds:

How do they look in the photo?

Orchid seeds are 15,000 times smaller than a grain of wheat, and outwardly resemble simple dust or even small wood chips. In addition, they have a very small supply of nutrients. These disadvantages are compensated by a large amount of planting material (one flower gives up to 3-5 million seeds), which allows the orchid to multiply without problems.

Where to buy, how much do they cost?

You can buy seeds at any major Chinese online store. It is necessary to search in such sections as "Garden and Vegetable Garden", "Home and Garden", etc. The cost of one package can be in the range of 35-60 rubles.

How to check for authenticity?

After the order arrives, open the package and carefully examine its contents. Each seed should look like this:

  • elongated, slightly widened in the middle;
  • length - 0.35-3 mm, width - 0.08-0.3 mm;
  • color from beige to light brown.

If in the received package you find planting material, the appearance of which does not correspond at all to the description given above, most likely you will not be able to grow an orchid from it.

Under natural conditions, the seed pods of an exotic flower open on their own at the moment when they fully ripen. Therefore, do not hope that you will be able to order a real, unopened seed pod.

How to plant correctly?

Since growing an orchid from seed is a rather complicated process, try to strictly follow all the recommendations that will be described below.

Inventory and its sterilization

  • Glass flasks with a volume of 200-300 ml or simple glass jars, for example, from baby food, always with screw caps.
  • If the planting material will be grown in flasks, you will need a tripod, as well as cotton wool plugs covered with gauze.
  • Litmus paper.
  • Hydrogen peroxide (2%).
  • Disposable syringe (sterile).

If you decide to use regular glass jars, poke a small hole in each lid and insert a glass tube into it. Plug the upper end of this tube with cotton wool.

Before planting, you need to sterilize all tubes and jars along with the lids. This can be done in an autoclave, steamer or medical sterilizer. The sterilization process should take place at a temperature of 120 degrees and last at least 30 minutes. After that, all containers must be cooled to room temperature.

Preparation of the culture medium

To prepare the mixture you will need:

  • agar-agar - 8 g;
  • phosphorus-nitrogen-potassium fertilizer - 1.5 g;
  • glucose - 10 g;
  • fructose - 10 g;
  • activated carbon - 1 g;
  • root-forming stimulant - 5 drops;
  • distilled water - 1 liter.

Step-by-step algorithm for preparing a nutrient mixture:

  1. Pour 0.5 L of water into a clean container and boil it.
  2. Add glucose, fructose, and agar to the boiling liquid.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer until all ingredients are dissolved.
  4. Pour the remaining 0.5 liters of water into another container, heat it up, add activated carbon, fertilizer and stimulant. Mix everything well.
  5. Combine both compositions in one container.
  6. Check the acidity level of the finished mixture with litmus test. It should be in the range of 4.8-5.2 pH. If the pH needs to be lowered, add a little potash solution, if, on the contrary, increase it, add phosphoric acid.
  7. Pour 30 mg of the prepared mixture into prepared containers, close them and sterilize all together for 30 minutes.

Then observe the flasks closely for 4-5 days. If mold appears in them, restart the cooking process.

If you do not want to spend time and energy on making a culture medium, just buy a ready-made mixture in a specialized store.

Video on preparing a nutrient medium for sowing orchid seeds:

Seeds must be disinfected before sowing. This will stop the development of bacterial and fungal diseases. For this, the planting material is irradiated with an ultraviolet lamp or immersed in a 2% hydrogen peroxide solution for 5-10 minutes. Now you can go directly to sowing:

  1. Pull the seeds out of the disinfection liquid with a sterile syringe and apply them to the surface of the culture medium.
  2. At this point, try to gently shake the flask with the nutrient substrate. This is necessary to evenly distribute the seed over the entire surface.
  3. Cover the flasks with cotton swabs and set them to germinate.

First care after landing

Containers with planting material must be kept under a special light source at a temperature of 20-23 degrees. The light must act on the flasks for at least 12 hours a day. As long as the seeds are kept in sterile conditions, they do not require much maintenance. The main thing is to carefully observe sterility and maintain the required ambient temperature.

It is necessary to proceed to transplanting into a special substrate no earlier than after 10-12 months.

Problems and difficulties

The main problem with this growing method is that the seeds may simply not sprout. There may be several reasons:

  • poor quality planting material;
  • violation of sterility;
  • violation of the temperature regime and the duration of exposure to light.

Now you know that the process of growing orchids from seeds is quite complicated and lengthy, but interesting. If you have the desire and time, try to go through all the stages of growing, strictly following the instructions described in this article.
