October fruit and vegetable works
When it arrives to the month of October the winter season is approached with rapidity, when the temperatures are rigid and the crops of the fruit and vegetable must be checked and protected, to avoid that they can suffer damages because of the cold climate. Of course there are still many varieties within the orchard and orchard that can be grown and harvested during this period. The horticultural varieties that still give a good harvest are zucchini, green beans, cauliflower, carrots, peppers, fennel and pumpkins. As for the fruits, instead, we collect apples, pears, kiwi, raspberries and, in some cases, still figs. As for the works of the October fruit and vegetable month they must be aimed at preparing the soil for sowing winter crops, cleaning the plants with the elimination of dry leaves and diseased parts.
In the garden, numerous sowing is possible for the winter season and mulching is necessary for less resistant varieties. Transplants of some species, such as sage, must also be followed. For some crops sowing can be carried out in full or in seedbed. The sowing in the open ground can be made for beets, carrots, chicory, turnip greens, broad beans, lettuces, peas, parsley, sprigs, radishes, rocket, endive, spinach, valerian.
While as regards plantations and transplants it is possible to make them for garlic, asparagus (legs), onion cloves, artichokes, early onions.
Even where we do not sow we fertilize the soil with organic fertilizer and work it well, it will already be ready for the next sowing. We gather the last summer vegetables and weed out the plants that are now drying out.
Work in the garden
As mentioned, it is possible to perform numerous interventions for horticultural species in this period. Depending on the climate, there will be more or less the possibility of still having abundant crops of summer varieties, such as tomatoes and cucumbers. It is important to check that in this period water does not form, given that, often, the month of October can be quite rainy, so that, as far as watering is concerned, they are not necessary. It is possible to proceed with the multiplication of aromatic plants, such as lavender, thyme or marjoram. The now dry plants of the summer varieties should be eliminated, removing all the roots from the soil and proceeding, as always, to eliminate any weeds. The soil must be worked and prepared for the most rainy phase, providing some ducts in which water drainage is easier.
In this season in the orchard it is possible to collect various types of fruit, such as apples, pears and kiwis, but the one that certainly characterizes the month of October is the grape, since it is the period dedicated to the grape harvest. The pruning operations are then carried out on the fruit plants that have finished production, such as peach trees and apricot trees, so as to prepare the plants for the winter. Pruning must be done carefully, healing the cuts with the appropriate mastic, so as to prevent fungal diseases from arising. In this phase numerous fruit trees can be planted or transplanted, so that at the vegetative restart in spring they already have a well-developed root system. It is also the time to carry out possible grafts to obtain new plants and it is good to plan interventions with specific specific products to avoid the onset of diseases.
